Topic: Doxycycline Dosage for Shingles Treatment

Posted by: CuriousCat

Hi everyone! I've been diagnosed with shingles and my doctor prescribed doxycycline. However, he didn't specify the dosage or duration of treatment. Can anyone here provide some insight into what would be a typical dosage? Thanks in advance!

Hello CuriousCat,

Doxycycline is generally not used as the first-line treatment for shingles (herpes zoster). The standard antiviral medications like acyclovir, valacyclovir, or famciclovir are preferred. However, if your doctor prescribed doxycycline, it's likely to manage secondary bacterial infections that might occur due to the skin lesions caused by shingles.

A typical dosage of doxycycline for treating bacterial infections is 100 mg twice daily. The duration varies depending on the type and severity of the infection but usually ranges from 5-14 days. For your specific case, I highly recommend following up with your doctor to clarify the exact dosage and duration as prescribed.

Please ensure you discuss any concerns or questions directly with your healthcare provider for personalized medical advice.

Thanks DrDoc2019! That was really helpful. CuriousCat, I had shingles a few years back and ended up getting doxycycline to prevent any secondary infections. My doctor told me 100 mg twice daily for about 7 days worked well.

Thanks both of you! That was really helpful. DrDoc2019, I'll definitely follow up with my doc and clarify the dosage. ShinglesSurvivor, thanks for sharing your experienceit's good to hear from someone who has been through it.

I'm still a bit worried about managing this on my own without clear instructions. Is there anything else you'd recommend doing while taking doxycycline?

You're welcome, CuriousCat!

When taking doxycycline, here are some general tips to keep in mind:

  • Take it with water: Doxycycline can be taken either on an empty stomach or with food. However, avoid taking it with dairy products like milk and cheese as they can interfere with its absorption.

  • Avoid sun exposure: Doxycycline can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Use sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) and wear protective clothing.

  • Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water helps prevent side effects such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

  • Side effects: Common side effects include stomach upset, dizziness, and headaches. If these symptoms persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider.

Remember, its crucial to take the medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Dont stop taking doxycycline even if you feel better before finishing the course unless instructed otherwise.

Hope this helps! Stay in touch with your doctor for any additional guidance specific to your case.

Definitely agree with DrDoc2019s points. Also, I found it helpful to take doxycycline at the same time each day so I didnt forget a dose. It really helped keep my regimen consistent.

CuriousCat, hang in there! The worst part is usually over after about 7-10 days, and you'll feel much better soon.
