Forum Topic: Doxycycline 50mg Dosage for My Dog
Posted by FurMom123
Hey everyone,
I recently had to take my dog, a small terrier named Max, to the vet. He was prescribed doxycycline 50 mg tablets because of an infection. The vet mentioned something about splitting them in half, but I'm not entirely sure if that's correct or how often he should be taking it.
Could anyone with experience give me some advice? Also, is there anything specific I need to know when giving this medication?
Thanks a lot!

Hey FurMom123,
I've had to deal with doxycycline for my own dogs in the past. For small breeds like your terrier Max, it's quite common that you might be instructed to split the 50 mg tablets into halves or quarters depending on his weight and the vets prescription.
Typically, the dosage is about 2-5 mg per kilogram of body weight given every 12 hours. So for a dog weighing around 6 kg (about 13 lbs), that would be roughly one-quarter to half a tablet twice daily. Splitting them in half is usually done carefully with a pill cutter to ensure accurate dosing.
Make sure you follow the vets specific instructions as they have evaluated Max's condition and determined the right amount for his needs. If there are any concerns, don't hesitate to call your vet!

Hi FurMom123,
Just chimed in to say that with doxycycline (and many other antibiotics), its important to complete the full course of treatment as prescribed by the vet. Even if Max seems better before finishing all the pills, don't stop giving them! This will help ensure that the infection is fully cleared and reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance.
Also, doxycycline can upset a dog's stomach, so its often recommended to give it with food. If you notice any vomiting or diarrhea after administering the medication, let your vet know right away as they may need to adjust the dosage or provide another treatment option.
Good luck and I hope Max feels better soon!

Thank you both for the helpful responses!
VetFanatic, splitting the tablets sounds doable with a pill cutter. PawPatrol, good point about finishing the entire course, even if he seems to be feeling better.
Max weighs around 6 kg, so I think giving him half a tablet twice daily should work based on what you both mentioned. Just to be safe, Im going to give my vet another call just to double-check their recommendation and make sure there are no other special instructions I'm missing out on.
Really appreciate the advice!

You're welcome, FurMom123!
Always better to err on the side of caution and follow up with your vet. Theyll have Max's best interests in mind and can provide any additional guidance specific to his situation.
Take care, and I hope Max recovers quickly.

Absolutely agree! Double-checking with the vet is a wise move.
Also, keep an eye out for any signs of side effects such as loss of appetite or changes in behavior. If anything unusual happens, reach out to your vet right away.
Sending good vibes Max's way!

Thanks again everyone! I just talked to the vet and they confirmed that half a tablet twice daily is correct for Max. They also mentioned giving him some yogurt to help with his stomach since doxycycline can be hard on it.
Appreciate all your support!

Great, glad everything is sorted out! Adding a bit of plain yogurt can definitely help soothe the gut and make the medication easier for Max to handle.
Hope he recovers soon! Let us know how things go.

So happy to hear that it's all good now with your vets confirmation. Yogurt is a great idea, but just a small amount maybe about 1-2 tablespoons daily, depending on Maxs size and appetite.
Sending positive thoughts his way and hope he bounces back in no time! Dont hesitate to reach out if you have any more questions or concerns along the way!
