Hi everyone! I've been dealing with severe acne for years and my doctor suggested trying Accutane. I'm a bit nervous about the side effects but also excited to finally find some relief. Has anyone had experience with this medication? Any tips or thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Hey DermFanatic! I've been on Accutane and it truly made a difference for me. The key is to go in with an open mind and follow your doctor's advice closely. It does have some side effects, like dry skin and lips, but those are manageable with the right skincare routine. How did your consultation with the dermatologist go?

Thanks for your response, HappyHealer! The consultation was pretty detailed. My doctor explained that I can get Accutane from a pharmacy in Canada since it's not as readily available here. She also emphasized the importance of regular follow-ups and blood tests while on treatment. Are those common?

Yes, DermFanatic, follow-up appointments are crucial. Your doctor needs to monitor your liver function and cholesterol levels since Accutane can impact these areas. They will probably ask about any side effects you might be experiencing too. It's a bit of a commitment but totally worth it if the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.

Absolutely, MedMaven! My dermatologist made sure to schedule monthly check-ins initially, which gradually reduced to every few months once I was past the halfway point. It's a safety net really - makes you feel more secure about managing any side effects early on.

That sounds reassuring! What kind of skincare routine do you recommend for someone starting Accutane? I've heard it can make your skin very dry.

Great question, DermFanatic. You definitely need to be proactive about moisturizing. Look for products that are fragrance-free and hypoallergenic. A gentle cleanser is key too – avoid anything harsh or drying. Sunscreen every day is a must since Accutane can make your skin more sensitive to UV rays. Also, lip balm with SPF is important as dry lips are common.

I second everything MedMaven said! I ended up using a lot of Aquaphor and Cetaphil products which were really helpful. Also, make sure to stay hydrated – drinking plenty of water helps keep your skin moisturized from the inside out.

You're welcome, DermFanatic! Just remember to be patient with the results – it might take a couple of months for you to see significant improvement. But trust me, when you do, it'll be worth every bit of effort!
