Thread: Starting on Roaccutane - Questions and Advice Needed!

Hi everyone! Ive been dealing with severe acne for a long time now, and my dermatologist suggested that I try Roaccutane. She prescribed me 5mg of Roaccutane per day, and Im quite nervous about starting it. Has anyone here tried this medication? What were your experiences like? Any advice?

Hi SunShine87! Welcome to the forum. It's great that you're taking steps towards managing your acne with Roaccutane. This is a strong medication and can be very effective for severe cases of acne, but it does come with some side effects.

It sounds like your dermatologist has started you at a low dose, which is usually done to minimize any initial side effects. You'll likely see an increase in dosage over time as you progress through the treatment plan. It's important to follow up closely with your doctor and report any changes or concerns promptly.

Do let me know if you have specific questions about what to expect!

Thank you so much, DocDerm! Thats reassuring to hear. My main worry is the side effects, especially since Ive heard it can cause dry skin and lips. What are some tips for managing those? Also, how long should I expect the treatment to last?

You're very welcome! Managing side effects is crucial when taking Roaccutane, as you've noted.

  1. Dry Skin and Lips: Use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer throughout the day on your face and body. Lip balm with SPF (at least 30) should be applied several times daily to prevent chapped lips.

  2. Sun Protection: Roaccutane can increase sun sensitivity, so its important to use sunscreen daily and limit direct sunlight exposure.

  3. Eyes and Mouth: Dry eyes or a dry mouth might also occur; over-the-counter artificial tears and sugar-free gum can help.

  4. Blood Triglycerides and Liver Enzymes: Regular blood tests are necessary to monitor these levels, as Roaccutane can affect them.

  5. Mental Health: Theres a small chance of mood changes or depression. If you notice any significant shifts in your emotions, talk to your doctor immediately.

Regarding the treatment duration, it generally lasts between 16-20 weeks, but this varies depending on individual needs and response to medication. Your dermatologist will adjust dosages as needed and monitor progress closely.

Ive been on Roaccutane for about a month now. Its working well for me so far, but the dry skin is definitely noticeable! I use Cetaphil cream all over my face twice a day, and Aquaphor for my lips. My dermatologist also recommended a humidifier to keep in my room at night to help with overall moisture.

DocDerm mentioned mood changes, which I experienced too. It was just a bit of anxiety now and then but nothing severe. Still, its good to be aware of this possibility and talk about it openly with your doctor.

Good luck, SunShine87! Keep us posted on how things go!

Thanks for the advice, DocDerm and CalmAndCollected! I'll definitely start using a moisturizer and lip balm religiously. And its good to know that mood changes can happen but are manageable with awareness.

Ill make sure to check in again once I get started on this journey. Thanks again!

Absolutely agree with DocDerm! Just keep at it, and dont be too hard on yourself. It can take time for Roaccutane to work fully, but once it does, the results are usually worth it.

Feel free to post back if you need any more tips or support along the way!
