Forum Topic: Metformin Side Effects - Sharing Experiences

Post by SugarFree123

Hi everyone,

I've been prescribed Metformin for my diabetes and I'm starting to experience some side effects like nausea and diarrhea. Has anyone else had similar experiences? How did you manage them? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello SugarFree123,

Thank you for reaching out. It's common for patients to experience gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea when they first start taking Metformin. These side effects often diminish over time as your body adjusts to the medication. However, it's important to discuss these issues with your healthcare provider.

Thank you, DocOnCall4U! Thats reassuring to know. Is there anything I can do in the meantime to alleviate these symptoms?

Certainly! Here are a few tips that might help:

  • Take Metformin with meals: This can reduce stomach discomfort.
  • Start at a low dose and gradually increase: Sometimes, your healthcare provider may recommend starting with a lower dose of Metformin and increasing it slowly to allow your body to adjust.
  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to help alleviate diarrhea.
  • Avoid fatty or greasy foods: These can sometimes exacerbate digestive issues.

If symptoms persist or become severe, please consult your doctor. They may need to reassess your dosage or consider other treatment options.

Hi there, SugarFree123!

Ive been on Metformin for a while now, but initially, it was tough. I experienced the same side effects as you - nausea and diarrhea. Heres what helped me:

  • Start with the lowest dose: As DocOnCall4U suggested, starting low helps your body adjust.
  • Take it after meals: This really made a difference for me; taking my Metformin right before or during dinner seemed to help the most.
  • Stay active: Light exercise like walking can also aid digestion and reduce some of the nausea.

After about two weeks, I noticed that these side effects became much milder. If you have any concerns, dont hesitate to reach out to your doctor!

Thats great, HappyDiabetic4Life! Thank you for sharing your experience. Its really helpful knowing that it gets better with time.

DocOnCall4U, one more question - are there any long-term side effects I should be aware of?

Reply by DocOnCall4U

Good question, SugarFree123!

Metformin is generally well-tolerated over the long term. However, there are a few things to watch out for:

  • B-12 deficiency: Some patients may develop low vitamin B-12 levels while on Metformin. Your doctor might recommend regular blood tests and possibly supplements.
  • Lactic acidosis: This is rare but serious. It can occur if your body produces too much lactic acid, often due to kidney or liver issues. If you experience unexplained nausea, muscle weakness, dizziness, or trouble breathing, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

Regular check-ups are important to monitor any potential long-term effects and adjust treatment as needed.
