Hi there! I was just prescribed doxycycline 100mg for what seems to be a pretty stubborn case of acne. The doctor gave me 180 pills and said I should take it twice daily with food. Any insights or experiences you can share? Just trying to make sure I'm on the right track! Thanks in advance!

SunnyDay67, taking doxycycline for acne is pretty common and usually effective. It's an antibiotic that helps reduce inflammation and bacterial load associated with your condition. Make sure to follow the instructions closelytwice daily with food should help minimize any potential stomach upset. Also, keep in mind it might take a few weeks before you start seeing significant improvements.

HealthNinja, thanks for your response! That's good to know. I was also told not to forget the sunscreen part of my routine since it can make me more sensitive to sunlight. Do you have any tips on how much SPF and how often should I apply?

SunnyDay67, that's a great point about sun sensitivity. Its crucial with doxycycline to protect your skin from the sun. Aim for an SPF of at least 30 and make sure it's broad-spectrum, which protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Apply it liberally every two hours when you're out in the sun or whenever you swim or sweat heavily. Remember, even on cloudy days, harmful rays can still reach your skin.

HealthNinja, thanks for all this info! Im also a bit worried about side effects. Apart from the sun sensitivity and possibly some nausea or upset stomach, are there other things to watch out for? And how long should I plan on taking these pills before seeing my doctor again?

SunnyDay67, you're right to be cautious about potential side effects. Apart from sun sensitivity and gastrointestinal issues, some people might experience dizziness or headaches. It's important to stay hydrated and keep up with a balanced diet.
As for follow-up appointments, it would be wise to check in with your dermatologist around the six-week mark. That way, they can assess whether the treatment is working and make any necessary adjustments. Remember, while doxycycline can help manage acne effectively, it's usually part of a broader skincare regimen that might include topical treatments as well.
If you notice any severe side effects or if your skin doesn't seem to be improving after six weeks, dont hesitate to reach out to your doctor sooner rather than later. They can guide you on whether adjusting the dosage or switching medications would be best for you.
